Information Wanted

I own a Colvic Countess 28 bilge keel. I have had many interesting adventures with her and great enjoyment from her in our home waters of Porthmadog area in the top corner of Cardigan Bay and around Anglesey.I was reading an interesting article about boat performance data etc in the February 2011 issue of Yachting Monthly. wondered if there was any information available regarding Angle of Vanishing Stability and Stix Number etc as I have been unable to source the data anywhere on line. The Ballast Ratio,  Displacement/Length Ration etc I can work out from data I have and have found on the internet. My boat, Moonfleet, was shown in the introduction to a series of articles on West Coast Harbours by Ken Enden in Yachting Monthly January 2008  - well we all have to have some claim to fame !I hope you can help to satisfy my curiosity.

.......................................................

I am the proud owner of a 28ft Colvic Countess (Bilge Keel).  She is

fitted with a
Yanmar 2GM20F 20HP engine.(15x8 3 bladed prop)

I wonder if you ar one of your members can help me with a problem.  I
would like to understand whether I have an incorrectly sized prop fitted.

The boat is perfectly happy at around three quarters throttle but on full
throttle dips her stern by around 12" and emits a continuous black sooty
cooling water from the exhaust.  Return to three quarters throttle and the
boat settles level again and the cooling water runs clean.  I do not have
a tacho but my impression is that when I use full throttle I do not gain
revs and certainly do not gain speed.  My conclusion is that the full
throttle setting is overloading the engine due to the incorrect pitch of
the prop.

Could I ask if you have the prop sizing details of any of your members 28"
bilge keel boats with a similar 20HP engine?

Any help would be  greatly appreciated, to

Mallorca Calling!

This is an e-mail recently received from a member in Mallorca.

Hi, only to let you know I have started a group on Mallorca, which may be of interest to our members, Boating in Mallorca, if anyone plans a visit, please let them know one about the site, and two, I have now lived here with Maureen my wife on our Countess 33, so have built up many contacts, and a lot of local knowledge.

Would you also say, that if any member joins my site then please ask them to refer to the fact that they are Colvic members, and that way, I know and I will contact them personally.

Honour for COA Members

Here is the text of the Ocean Cruising Club’s letter to our members Mike and Helen Norris, which needs no commentary.

Dear Mike and Helen

Please forgive the informality of an email but it is certainly the most expeditious way of communicating these days.

I have great pleasure in writing to you to inform you that the committee has voted you as the winners of The Rambler Medal which is awarded for ‘the most meritorious short voyage’.

Who can possibly argue with the fact that you are thoroughly deserving of this award for your excellent article for Flying Fish and the wonderful photographs that accompanied it.  You will have inspired many others to emulate your circumnavigation of Great Britain and Ireland on board ‘Island Drifter’ – me included!

May I be the first to offer you my hearty congratulations!

The formal Awards Ceremony and dinner takes places on Friday 30th March 2012 at the Royal Southampton Yacht Club in Ocean Village, Southampton.

You are cordially invited to attend to receive The Rambler Medal

I look forward to hearing from you.

With kind regards

Peter Whatley
